3 Vignerons Rioja La Esquirla del Bardallo 2018 is a Tempranillo and Viura blend from the Rioja Alta region of Spain. This small-batch project sources fruit from a tiny 0.55-hectare plot characterised by clay, limestone and river stones, managed according to biodynamic principles since 2010. 3 Vignerons utilises open fibreglass vats, whole-cluster fermentation with 50% stems, and ageing on fine lees in neutral French and Austrian barriques for just over 12 months.

The 2018 La Esquirla del Bardallo was produced with a majority of Tempranillo with 3% Viura and has only 13.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.39, exceptionally low. It`s from 36-year-old vines on limestone soils in the paraje of El Bardallo in the north of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, a cool site protected by the Sierra de Toloño and influenced by the north wind, where other growers have vines and are producing wines. These vines are farmed biodynamically, and the grapes were picked the 3rd of October, fermented in open-top vats with foot treading and maceration/infusion with manual punch-down and a maceration of 45 days. It matured in Austrian and French oak barrels for 16 months. The wines from 2018 have beautiful tannic structure and are very textured. There is freshness and purity, with great definition, aromatic notes, spicy with citrus freshness (think orange peel) and very good length. This is a very pretty wine. 1,654 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2020. - Luis Gutiérrez
