Te Whare Ra is a boutique winery located in Renwick, Marlborough, and their 11ha vineyard is one of the oldest in the region having been planted in 1979. Great care is taken throughout production and all farming is done organically and biodynamically. An intensely perfumed, off-dry Gewürztraminer with notes of lychees, ripe oranges and cloves. These lead into luscious varietal flavours of lychee and quince, with underlying characters of ginger and exotic spice. The palate shows intense fruit concentration and weight with a fine, soft texture and excellent persistence of flavour.
- The 2020 Gewürztraminer positively bursts with lychees, roses and the fruit-salad penny chews of my childhood (although inflation probably means they're no longer a penny). Round, juicy and off-dry, the wine retains a sense of shape and definition. While it has reached 14% alcohol, it remains fresh, with a touch of spritz enlivening it further. The fragrant finish also provides a bit of tannic grip, giving a sense of reassuring structure and tying the wine up neatly. This cleverly made Gewürz shows that the makers at Te Whare Ra have a real handle on this grape. Enjoy in youth for its fabulous floral and fruity flamboyance.
