Founded in Bordeaux in 1725 by Irish wine merchant Thomas Barton, the Barton family has woven its history into the fabric of Bordeaux for almost three centuries. It was his grandson, Hugh Barton, who established Château Léoville Barton in 1826, acquiring a quarter of the historic Léoville estate in Saint-Julien. Just a few decades later, the château was recognised as a Second Growth in the 1855 Classification, a distinction it continues to hold today.
What makes Léoville Barton particularly distinctive is the continuity of its family ownership. Across ten generations, the Bartons have remained at the helm, with Lilian Barton Sartorius now leading the estate alongside her children, Mélanie and Damien, continuing a tradition that has remained remarkably constant while evolving with each generation. Today, the family’s presence in Bordeaux encompasses three estates: Château Mauvesin Barton in Moulis-en-Médoc, and Château Langoa Barton and Château Léoville Barton in Saint-Julien.
We are delighted to welcome Lilian Barton, who will guide guests through the tasting, offering a unique opportunity to explore the character and evolution of her family’s Châteaux, their vineyards, and the enduring winemaking philosophy that has shaped them across generations.
