In conversation with Mathieu Meyer, Estate Director, Château Galoupet

Can you share the vision behind Château Galoupet and how the estate has evolved over the past few years?

Our vision is quite simple: we want to be the lighthouse of desirable sustainability. To do so, we work with Nature to craft exceptional and delicious wines.

How would you describe the unique characteristics of your terroir in Provence, and how do they shape the style of your rosés?

Being so close to the Mediterranean Sea has a big impact on our microclimate, with constant breezes and quite even temperatures. Our soils with schists, sandstones and quartz are quite different from the rest of Provence, with a lower pH. Those two elements, climate and soils, ensure deep fruit aromas and crispy acidity, key elements in great rosés.

Sustainability is central to Galoupet’s positioning. How does this influence your vineyard management and winemaking decisions on a day-to-day basis?

Sustainability is at the top of our mind in everything we do, from regenerative actions in the vineyard, water preservation, minimising our carbon footprint… It’s hard to sum up all our actions, but the fact that we obtained the Regenerative Organic Certification last year and the Adelphe award for best sustainable packaging are good testimonies of our profound engagement.

What defines the Galoupet house style, and how do you ensure consistency across vintages?

We strive to craft pleasure wines that reflect our terroir. This translates into wines with fresh fruit aromas, crisp and refreshing acidity, but also complexity and structure. Consistency across vintages comes from the capacity of our vineyard to absorb climatic fluctuations while still expressing the same personality. That being said, each vintage is slightly different, which makes our job a challenging passion!

Rosé is often misunderstood as a homogeneous category. How do you approach complexity, structure and ageing potential in your wines?

We pick each plot at its peak of maturity to get fruit with exceptional aromas but also deep structure. This structure, reinforced by the barrels for some plots and the natural acidity of our wines, is the key for our wines to age beautifully. To capture the complexity of our terroir in our bottles, each plot is harvested, vinified and aged separately.

How do you see consumer perceptions of premium rosé evolving, particularly in the luxury space?

People are becoming more and more conscious that rosé is only a colour, not the guarantee that a wine will be good or not. You can drink a fantastic, rich, and complex terroir wine… that happens to be a rosé. Our best pedagogic tool remains tasting: once people try our wines, there is very little convincing to do.

What role does innovation play at Galoupet, alongside more traditional winemaking techniques?

We embrace innovation at Château Galoupet, as long as it helps us to better express and protect our terroir. For example, we recently invested in insulated tanks that are great for preserving fruit aromas, but also much better for our carbon footprint.

How are you adapting to environmental and climate challenges in Provence?

There is no silver bullet to tackle this issue. We work on numerous things, from regenerative practices to improve our resilience to extreme events, like drought or floods, to the experiment on varieties better suited for drier and warmer climates. We also work meticulously on our carbon footprint; that’s the reason why our bottles are so light and tinted, as they are made of 85% recycled glass.

Why do you think Galoupet resonates with a Hedonism customer?

Château Galoupet is a wine that has quality and sustainability at the heart of our ethos. Both G de Galoupet and Cru Classe take Provence Rosé help to define what fine Provence Rosé should be. They are complex wines with depth and character, perfect to enjoy alone or for any gastronomic occasion. Also, Hedonism customers who care about protecting terroir and winemaking for generations to come will be supporting this endeavour by choosing Château Galoupet

Looking ahead, what excites you most about the future of Château Galoupet?

As we embrace regenerative practices, our Estate becomes better over time. I can’t wait to see the results, with more biodiversity, resilience, and even better wines.
