Pierre-Henry Gagey

Pierre-Henry Gagey is one of the most famous names in Burgundy. Having joined Maison Louis Jadot in the mid-1980s, he has risen to become director, overseeing the production of some of France's most prized appellations - Echezeaux, Chevalier-Montrachet, Corton Charlemagne and Bonnes Mares to name just a few. We caught up for Pierre-Henry to talk vineyards, vintages and what it's like to make over 200 different wines a vintage...

Louis Jadot is one of the leading négociants of Burgundy and is considered by many to have one of the finest winemaking reputations in the region with a portfolio of wines that spans many appellations and quality levels. Their Charmes-Chambertin is often hallmarked by its open-knit style and its rich, sweet and expansive flavours. 1978 was a superb vintage and this should be approaching its zenith.

Maison Louis Jadot is one of Burgundy’s most respected negociants. Founded in 1859, the prestige and quality of the estate’s wines were well established in the 19th century and they have continued buying highly desirable vineyards over the past decades to ensure a portfolio of almost unrivalled breadth and depth. This is a wonderful mature example of Chevalier-Montrachet from the excellent 1995 vintage.

Though Louis Jadot is one of the leading négociants of Burgundy, any wine labelled as “Héritiers des Louis Jadot” indicates a cru which has historically belonged to the Jadot family. The 2015 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru Demoiselles is a superb wine with excellent fruit weight, rich texture, incisive acidity and a wonderfully long, mineral-infused finish. It is perfect for drinking now but in larger format bottles this should evolve beautifully over the next 20-30+ years.
