Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who established the vineyards with cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec taken from the vineyards of Bordeaux. The estate planted Tempranillo alongside these Bordelais varietals, which now makes up the majority of the modern Vega Sicilia blend. Valbuena is the purest expression of Tinto Fino at Vega Sicilia. The other variety used is Merlot, which is added to a greater or lesser extent depending on the vintage. The 2006 is available here in magnum format. \"Starting on 9 September, 2006 was one of the earliest vintages here - the unusually hot spring and sunny summer served to bring in a classic vintage. The wine is generous, full-bodied, plump and fleshy, bursting with red plum and floral notes spiked with citrus. It`s harmonious, well-balanced and finely spiced, with more American (60%) than French oak used for the period of ageing in new barrels. This is the last year where Malbec is blended with the Merlot.
