Luis Pato is one of the preeminent producers of the Bairrada region and is a champion of the local red grape variety, Baga. Pato has definitely elevated this variety to new levels and often it reveals characteristics akin to Nebbiolo in terms of tannin and Pinot Noir in terms of elegance.
Vinha Pan is one of his flagship wines and is 100% Baga from a single chalky-soil vineyard called Panasquiera. The 2011 is a little more powerful and intense than its 2010 predecessor yet still exhibits classical black fruits, earthy savouriness, bright acidity and ripe, but grippy, tannins.
