Since 2008, Peter Veyder-Malberg has been making massive waves with his innovative, highly complex and terroir-driven micro-cuvées of Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. 2014 was a complicated vintage and therefore the typical single-vineyard bottlings were not produced. The grapes that were “saved” were still of relative high quality and had excellent acidity so were blended together and released as an off-dry wine – atypical for the region and, indeed, Austrian Riesling more generally. The wine, Liebedich, was considered a great success and has been recreated in subsequent “better” vintages. It provides a nice counterpoint to Peter’s otherwise bone-dry portfolio of wines.
