Tara is an innovative project exploring viticulture and winemaking in the extreme terroir of the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. Production is exceptionally limited (sometimes only a few hundred bottles) and focuses on three varieties, Chardonnay Pinot Noir and Syrah, from a single vineyard situated just 22km from the Pacific Ocean.
Red Wine 1 is Pinot Noir fermented with native yeasts in small, open-top tanks and matured for 14 months in fifth use 228-litre Burgundy barrels. It is intense and complex with notes of sweet-sour cherry, mushroom and earth. On the palate it is crisply defined, with fresh acidity, chalky but ripe tannins and an intriguing salty minerality on the finish.
