Stags Leap Cask 23 1994
Cask 23 is a blend of fruit from the two flagship vineyards, SLV and Fay. The exact portion from each vineyard varies with each year.
In general, 1994 was very good in California, for Cask 23 it is considered one of the greatest vintages.
98.4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1.4% Merlot and 0.2% Petite Verdot. Producer note on this vintage – “Bursting with boysenberry, dried cherry and plum components enhanced by elements of white pepper and smoke. The full velvety texture of this wine evokes an image of ripened blackberries ready to drop from the bush. Sleek fruit qualities rest elegantly upon a framework of silky tannins and subdued spice. A lush plummy core slowly recedes as vanillan edges begin to soften.”
Stag`s Leap Wine Cellars
Not to be confused with the Stag's Leap Winery, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars has founded by Warren Winiarski in 1972, who left his job at Robert Mondavi to setup his own winery in Napa. The winery achieved cult status when the 1973 vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon won first place, above the finest red wines of Bordeaux at Stephen Spurrier's famous "Judgement of Paris" tasting in 1976.
The winery now make a range of wines including a Chardonnay, a Merlot, a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon called Fay and Cask 23 - the winery's flagship blend that is only made in selected vintages. These are classic wines with just a hint of Californian excess - fruit character is ripe, but not over the top and the tannins are firm and fine grained on the Cabernet Sauvignons while Karia Chardonnay is tropical and full, seeing a hint of new oak during the maturation.
