Under the direction of winemaker Joel Peterson, the illustrious Ravenswood Winery became well-known for the quality of its Zinfandel but also helped pioneer the concept of singular varietal Merlot from single vineyard designations. The Los Chamizal Vineyard was planted in 1974 on the rugged hillside above the Sonoma Valley, between the Ridges of the Mayacamas Mountains.
