Promontory Magnum 2011
Back in 1989, Bill Harlan discovered the remote, uniquely rugged piece of land that would eventually become the Promontory vineyard; however, its inaugural commercial release was only in 2009. Though also primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, the style of Promontory differs to Harlan Estate and Bond due to the distinctive terroir-derived character of the fruit. More tannic and often with greater acidity, shorter macerations and longer maturation in oak (5 years) are favoured to retain clarity and vivacity. The 2011 is reflective of the generally cooler vintage and, whilst still expressing huge complexity and depth, it drinks more like exceptional-quality Bordeaux than high-octane California.
