`Porseleinberg 2013 is a full-bodied red wine produced from Syrah grapes in the Swartland region of South Africa. Produced by Boekenhoutskloof winemaker Mark Kent and farmer-winemaker Callie Louw, Porseleinberg is a single-vineyard wine produced on poor granitic soils in the Swartland. Reminiscent of a Côte-Rôtie from the northern Rhône, this wine is firmly established as one of the finest Syrahs in South Africa – if not the very finest. Vinified with whole bunches and matured in concrete eggs and foudre barrels. "Wonderfully expressive on the nose with notes of red and black fruit, purple flowers, some smoked meat, black olive and, yes, a touch of earthiness. The palate shows good fruit concentration, fresh acidity and fine, powdery tannins. Though the alcohol by volume of 13.5% is the same as the 2012, it seems to have more heft and it’s altogether less geeky." Christian Eedes
