The 1979 vintage marked the first release of Opus One, a joint venture between pioneering Californian winemaker Robert Mondavi and the late Baron Philippe de Rothschild. 1988 was a complicated vintage for many in California but this is a wonderful release now at its absolute peak for drinking. It displays admirable berry fruit, spice and tobacco-infused savoury character, with a softness of structure now perfect for enjoying alongside slow-cooked meat dishes.
