This Pinot Noir by the illustrious Mount Difficulty is one of a series of releases that celebrate some of the oldest and most acclaimed single vineyards in Central Otago. Perched atop the banks of the Kawarau River, the Long Gully Vineyard is amongst the oldest in Bannockburn and is noteworthy for its clay and coarse Lochar gravel soils.
In 2015, 1/3 of the grapes were destemmed, with a pre-fermentation cold maceration for around 7 days followed by a very light extraction throughout primary fermentation. It was racked to barrels for 16 months maturation and bottled unfined and unfiltered. The result is a crisply defined, tensile and fine-grained wine, with lovely notes of dark cherry, spices, earth and mocha. Though perfect for drinking now, there is ample mid-palate density and textural tannic framework to suggest cellaring for up to 10 years should be no problem.
