Domaine de Montcalmès was established in 1998 by Frédéric Pourtalié and his father in the village of Montcalmès, 30km north-west of Montpellier. Frédéric trained at neighbour Grange des Père as well as with Alain Graillot, and now produces around 4,000 cases per year from 22 hectares of organically farmed vines in the Terrasses de Larzac appellation.
The 2016 is a blend of 60% Syrah, 20% Mourvèdre and 20% Grenache Noir, vinified separately using natural yeasts and aged for 24 months in used oak barrels. It is a rich, sun-kissed and silky-smooth red with beautifully ripe notes of morello cherry, blackberry, anise, garrigue herbs and black pepper.
