Founded in 2008, Matervini is the winemaking project of winemakers and co-founders Santiago Achaval and Roberto Cipresso, both formerly of Achaval Ferrer. With a base is in Los Chacayes in the Uco Valley, their aim is to explore how very different wines can be born from the same grape variety (in this case Malbec) when sourced from a selection of distinctive terroirs.
This is a blend of Roussanne, Marsanne and Viognier from vines planted in 2009 on alluvial soils at 1,100m altitude. The different varieties are co-fermented with five days of skin-contact, prior to fermentation in concrete eggs and used barriques. Ripe, powerful and oily in texture, this is a superb wine made in the traditional Rhône mould.
