Founded in 1991, Marcassin (French for ‘young wild boar’) is a tiny winery located on the Sonoma Coast that focuses solely on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Having either worked or consulted for some of the region’s finest wineries (e.g Peter Michael, Colgin and Bryant), the supremely talented owner and winemaker, Helen Turley, is considered to be one of the most influential figures in Californian wine.
For the Marcassin Vineyard Chardonnay, grapes are harvested before sunrise to retain maximum freshness, followed by whole-cluster fermentation with indigenous yeasts and maturation on lees in 100% new Francois Freres oak barrels for 12 months. The 2008 release received high praise from critic Robert Parker, who bestowed it with a perfect 100-point score and drinking window up to 2026. Given this wines remarkable complexity and capacity to age, it would not be surprising if it far surpassed that estimate.
