Liberty from the excellent southern Rhône winery, Domaine la Barroche, is a wonderful Vin de France produced from 65-year-old vines in Côtes du Rhône and some declassified Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The 2016 is a blend of 55% Grenache, 18% Syrah, 12% Mourvèdre, 10% Cinsault and 5% Carignan, matured in old oak foudres and demi-muids for 18 months. Medium-bodied and juicy, it is laden with vibrant red and black fruits, spices, violets and distinctive stoney minerality. Despite its humble classification there is a level depth and complexity here that would put some producers of Châteauneuf to shame!
