Château Léoville Barton is a highly lauded Saint-Julien 2ème Cru Classé estate renowned for producing old-school wines that are intensely structured and often require extended cellaring before entering their prime drinking window. 2001 is a vintage that will forever live in the shadows of its illustrious predecessor but is a fine year in its own right. A blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc, this is a classic example middle-aged Saint-Julien with its charming notes of crème de cassis, tobacco, earth and pencil shavings.
The 2001 Léoville-Barton presents plenty of brambly red fruit on the nose, along with singed leather and mushroom; it’s just a little more animally than I expected. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and sappy, offering supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity, and lightly spiced with white pepper and clove. Quite persistent in the mouth. Not sophisticated, perhaps, but classic in style, fresh and toothsome.

Chateau Leoville Barton

Chateau Leoville Barton

Hailing from the appellation of Saint Julien in Bordeaux, Château Leoville Barton has been family-run since 1826 with the famous Anthony Barton raising the estate to ever greater heights in the second half of the 20th century and his daughter Lilian taking the reins in recent years.

A superb quality Second Growth, Château Leoville Barton is renowned for producing old-school wines that are intensely structured and often require extended cellaring before entering their prime drinking window. The estate also produces an excellent quality second wine, La Réserve de Barton, a red wine produced from young vines. Vineyard holdings cover 51 hectares - planted to 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc.
