Château Latour is one of the oldest wine producing properties in the appellation of Pauillac and has a history dating back to the 14th Century. It was classified as a First Growth in 1855 and is widely regarded as one of the most consistent of all the elite châteaux, with a reputation for wines of remarkable longevity. 1949 was the driest since 1893 and is widely regarded as very high quality.

Robert Parker awarded this wine 98 points when reviewing for The Wine Advocate in the year 2000. He described it as having “a rare opulence, a voluptuous texture, full body, terrific freshness, and a chewy, fleshy, succulent finish” and gave a drinking window up until 2020.
