This is an interesting and innovative wine produced by the legendary Piedmont winery, G. D. Vajra. The vineyard was purchased in 1984 but, sitting at 480m a.s.l., it was deemed a little too high and the soil a little to sandy for Nebbiolo. Thus, Riesling was planted instead using clones sourced directly from Alsace. It is vinified entirely in stainless steel.
The 2019 has a ripe and round aroma profile redolent of citrus and exotic fruit. The bouquet flits between tangy lemon and mandarin orange with just the merest hint of lemongrass and crushed stone minerality. A gently sweet finish suggests this would pair beautifully with spicy and aromatic Asian cuisine.
