Jim Barry The Armagh 2002 is a full-bodied single-vineyard Shiraz from the Clare Valley of South Australia. First released in 1985 by the pioneering Clare Valley winemaker Jim Barry, the Armagh has become one of the most renowned Shiraz wines in Australia. The Armagh vineyard was named by the original Irish immigrants who settled there in 1849. In 1968, Jim Barry purchased the 3.3ha vineyard and made the wise decision to plant it with Shiraz vines. Today these very low-yielding vines produce an Australian icon. The 2002 Armagh was matured for 14 months in French and American oak barrels. "Abyss-black and adheres to the unwritten but well understood rule that Armagh must be big and bold, more appropriate for a passionate rendezvous than the dinner table. This vintage offers penetrating eucalyptus, white pepper, even meaty aromas. The palate is full and rich, dealing mixed berries, plum, eucalyptus and a hint of caramel. There are lasting, grippy tannins on the back palate, with notes of wheat bread and licoricey on the finish." Wine Enthusiast, 2006
