Domaine Guigal is among the great producers of the Rhône Valley and is often considered as a benchmark for quality. Ex Voto is their flagship wine from the hill of Hermitage first created in 2005 and is an extremely limited cuvée only produced in the best vintages. It is 100% Syrah from the famous lieux-dits of Bessards, Greffieux, Murands and Hermite, all of which have vines between 40 and 90 years of age.
The 2013 vintage was a complex one for many producers, but Guigal have turned out an awesome wine with this hugely concentrated, but wonderfully elegant, wine. Already very approachable, it offers up notes of sweet black fruits, new saddle leather, exotic spices, wild herbs and smashed rocks. Though with less heft and power of other vintages, this is still a fine release and should have at least 20-30 years of evolution.
