Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is a prestigious wine estate situated within the Saint-Julien appellation. It is classified as a Second Growth under the 1855 Bordeaux classification, a testament to its historical reputation for producing high-quality wines. The estate is known for its Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant red wines, which often feature a smaller proportion of Merlot in the blend. The 1978 growing season had some challenges, including a cool, wet spring and a hot, dry summer. However, favourable weather during harvest helped to produce well-balanced wines with good aging potential.
The 1978 Ducru-Beaucaillou is a vintage I last tasted in 2009, my own bottle that surpassed expectations. Here again, it proves to be the highlight of this period with vestiges of red berry fruit, peppermint and cigar humidor (very similar to my previous tasting note.) The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, fresh and vital, gentle grip towards the finish with moderate aftertaste. It is the freshness that carries this 1978, well worth seeking out if you find a bottle. Tasted at the Ducru Beaucaillou vertical at the château. - Neil Martin
