By European standards Domaine Janasse is a relative newcomer having only been established in 1973 but in a short space of time has come to be recognised as one of the highest quality producers of modern style Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The cuvée known as ‘Vieilles Vignes’ is a blend of 85% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 3% Mourvedre with the inclusion of many other varieties providing the balance. All fruit comes from vines that range in age from 60 to 100 years old and the wine is aged in a combination of foudres and new, French oak demi-muids. The 2012 is wonderfully rich, ripe and layered. Now entering its prime drinking window, it boasts exuberant notes of black fruits, lavender, black pepper, liquorice and deep, stoney minerality.
