Chateau Musar was established in 1930 by Gaston Hochar in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley, around 30km north of Beirut and is undoubtedly the country’s most famous winery. Musar Red is an intriguing wine made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Cinsault from old, low-yielding vines and is aged for seven years in a combination of French oak barrels, concrete tanks and bottle before release.
The 2011 is rich and fragrant with scents of mulberry, black cherry, plum, mocha and exotic spices. The palate is full and intense, laden with deep black fruits and spice, and framed perfectly by ripe tannins. It is a wine that is notorious for ageing exceptionally well, but this dense and powerful vintage will easily keep for a decade or more.
