Branco Palace Hotel Bussaco 2014
Alexandre de Almeida, founder of the oldest hotel chain in Portugal, began producing Bussaco Wines at the famous Bussaco Palace Hotel in 1917, adopting the concept of linking luxury hotels to a winery with their own local wine. The Branco Reservado is a unique blend of Encruzado and Maria Gomes from Dao and Bical from Bairrada, fermented and aged in new French oak. Pale in colour, the 2014 is tight, bright and full of energetic, citrus-driven intensity. Powerful and precise on the palate, there is also lovely savoury complexity and inner mouth perfume, with notes of smoked nuts, anise and citrus zest. This is a wine with a fantastic track record for ageing so would perhaps be at its best with a few more years bottle age.
