There are just two wines produced under DOC regulations in the Montefalco area of Umbria – one white and one red. Montefalco Rosso must by law contain a minimum of 70% Sangiovese but will often also include the locally grown Sagrantino grape variety, and the Riserva must be matured for a minimum of 17 months.
The Rosso Riserva from Montefalco icon, Arnaldo Caprai, was first produced in 1993 and is a blend of 70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino and 15% Merlot, aged for 20 months in French oak barrique with an additional 6 months in bottle. It is full-bodied, rich and rounded, with velvety tannins and a long, complex finish.
